Kumaon lies at the feet of the expansive Himalayas. Situated between Garhwal and Nepal, Kumaon offers an unspoilt natural setting where forests and wildlife are yet to unfold their mysteries. Native religious customs and early traditions are still alive here. In this area, cultures have merged together leaving behind a variety of architectural marvels like ancient temples, early paintings and charming Kumaoni houses set amid green terraces. Our itinerary covers both, the cultural and natural aspects of this region.

Each season carries its own magic. Spring brings in blue skies, fruit trees blossom, and the forests turn flaming red with rhododendron flowers. Autumn comes in with golden sunshine, hills dotted with cosmos flowers and the wild cherry trees in bloom. Winter is crisp and clear, the sweet scent of the mimosa filling the air.

Village Trek

The highlight of this trek is the thought of the Village Trek. Staying in a home in the village or in a camp in the village itself, it provides an understanding into the lives and daily routine of the Kumaoni villager. Overnight stays in their households give you a chance to experience their warm hospitality and spend quality time to understand how they live their lives.

Lodging may be rustic but is clean and has all the basic amenities. The village houses have been partly renovated and toilet facilities added without compromising on the ambience. The traditional food is hygienically cooked by the hosts, using farm fresh veggies and herbs from their fields. Bottled water is provided. Guests are most welcome to observe or get involved. You can relax, chat with the locals and hear stories of the past. On request, we can arrange a lovely bonfire evening with traditional Kumaoni folk dance and music.

Starting from Delhi we take you to explore the magnificent beauty and diversity Himalayas offer. We start with camping and birding at the foothills of Himalayas. Sat Tal, which literally means ‘Seven Lakes’ in Hindi, has lovely views, choices for strolls or treks in the woods or butterfly watching. It is aideal destination to unwind. You can also enjoy fishing or a boat ride on the serene lake. Thrill seekers can indulge in rappelling and rock climbing here too.

We then drive to Binsar and stay at a very charming Binsar Retreat. With great Himalayan views and excellent hospitality, it is a perfect base to explore Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, which is an ideal destination for adventure lovers, bird watchers and nature lovers.

Situated at elevation of 2141 meters above the sea level, the sanctuary is teeming with Barking Deer, Himalayan Black Bear, Leopard, Serow, Sambhar and more than 250 species of birds. You get stunning views of Himalayan peaks such as Panchchuli, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Kedarnath from here.

Our trek begins the next day. The village treks lead through picturesque villages with wonderfully carved doors and windows, terraced fields, waterfalls, streams and pine, cedar, oak and Rhododendron forests.

Dhaulchina from Binsar is a 7 km moderate trek. With beautiful forests and Himalayan views, it is a pleasure connecting with nature. Stay in a comfortable guest house or a fully serviced camp in Dhaulchina for the overnight stays. The following day brings an 8km day trek to the ancient Vimalkot Temple bringing you back to Dhaulchina.

Trek to Jageshwar

A 12 km trek downhill to spiritual hamlet of Jageshwar comes next where you can explore its ancient 8-12th century Shiva temples and stay overnight at Van Serai Lodge. Counted among the 12 Jyotirlings in the country, Jageshwar lies in a beautiful narrow valley hedged by monarch-sized, ancient deodars. Exquisite ancient temple ruins, beautiful Himalayan vistas, gurgling stream nearby, Jageshwar offers a spiritual retreat. With morning Yoga sessions and options for massage as well, you can choose to soak in the spiritual energy of this holy area or go for hikes in the surrounding woods. A picnic on the cool riverside is also a very enticing option. On the way we will also visit the old Jageshwar.

You have the option of either driving to Delhi from Jageshwar (9 hours) or you may opt for an overnight or day air-conditioned sleeper class train for a more comfortable journey. Once you reach Delhi, this tour ends.
